Captain
The captain is the highest authority on board an inland vessel.
Tasks:
- Overall responsibility for the ship, the crew, the cargo and safety.
- Control and navigation of the vessel in accordance with regulations and waterway conditions.
- Planning the route, checking weather and water levels.
- Coordination and monitoring of all processes on board.
- Contact for authorities and port operators.
Helmsman
The helmsman is the deputy captain and takes on many practical tasks on the bridge and in the operation of the ship.
Task:
- Responsible for watchkeeping and monitoring the route.
- Supports the captain in navigation and steering.
- Checks the condition of the load and its safe storage.
- Performs administrative tasks, such as keeping logbooks.
- Plans and coordinates maneuvers such as mooring and casting off or lock operations.
Fullsailor
The fullsailor is an experienced person who manages and organizes the work on deck.
Task:
• Coordinates the work of the deck crew (deck personnel).
• Responsible for the care and maintenance of deck equipment, ropes, bollards and anchors.
• Monitors and manages the loading and unloading of cargo.
• Supports docking, casting off and lock maneuvers.
• Ensure that the safety regulations on deck are observed..
Sailor
A sailor is a trained crew member who performs a variety of tasks on the ship.
Task:
• Carries out maintenance work such as cleaning, painting and minor repairs.
• Operates mechanical devices and equipment, such as anchor winches or cranes.
• Supports docking, casting off and lock maneuvers.
• Helps to secure and check the cargo.
• Takes on tasks in safety and emergency management, such as operating rescue equipment.
Light sailor
A light sailor is a person with less experience who performs basic tasks under supervision.
Task:
- Supports the deck crew in everyday tasks such as cleaning and maintenance.
- Helps to secure cargo and handle equipment.
- Learn the basics of navigation and other work on board.
- Assists in simple maneuvers and is under the direction of the full sailor or sailor.
Deckhand
The deckhand is a helper, often without formal training, who takes on simple tasks on the ship.
Task:
- Supports the maintenance of the deck and equipment.
- Performs general support work such as loading equipment or keeping the ship clean.
- Assists with loading and unloading under instruction.
- Assists with maneuvers, e.g. by handling ropes or fenders.
